Macron names ex-Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier as French PM: presidency

Following nearly two months of political impasse following snap polls, French President Emmanuel Macron chose Michel Barnier, the former Brexit negotiator for the European Union, as the country’s new prime minister on Thursday, the presidency announced.

Creating “a unifying government in the service of the country” is Barnier’s mandate, according to the president, which makes him the oldest premier in modern French history at the age of 73.
