After the recent quota shift and the consequent disruption of internet facilities, import and export activities, together with customs procedures, have gained momentum at all of the nation’s seaports and land ports.
However, as the country’s law and order situation has improved and broadband internet services have been restored, import and export operations as well as customs procedures at Chattogram Port, Mongla Port, and Benapole Land Port have begun to return to normal, much to the increasing volume of goods being loaded and unloaded.
Officials concerned said that hundreds of covered vans, trucks and trailers entered Chattogram port over the last few days and thus carrying unloaded goods to various parts of the country. Such situation was also seen at the Mongla Port and the country’s major land port in Benapole.
Talking to BSS, Chattogram Custom House Commissioner Mohammad Faizur Rahman said that operations at the major sea port is now going on in full swing like in the usual time while the workload is higher even in some cases.
“The overall import and export operations have come to a normalcy like delivery and shipment of goods. The customs officials attended office last Friday and Saturday to recoup the losses due to the disruption of internet services. The port officials are now much more active than the past,” he added.
Rezaul Karim, the director of Benapole Land Port, informed BSS that all import and export activities at the land port are now routine and carried out entirely by automated means.
Speaking with concerned officials, they reported that following the internet facilities’ outage on July 18 night, customs procedures at sea ports and land ports almost stopped. Then, at the Benapole Port, minimal manual customs processes were carried out for the unloading of perishable goods.Container deliveries to Chattogram Port are steadily rising, while hundreds of vehicles carrying goods are also passing through Benapole Port to reach Bangladesh.
