According to local authorities, three persons who were buried in a landslide in the early hours of Friday in the western Japanese prefecture of Ehime have been officially declared dead.
On Saturday afternoon, two men and one woman were discovered during a search by firefighters and police of the Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, disaster region.
Afterwards, it was established that they belonged to a family that had been reported missing following the landslide.
A man in his 90s, a lady in her 80s, and their 40-year-old son were among the casualties; their wooden home had collapsed as a result of the landslide.
On Friday morning, at approximately 4 a.m. local time, a 100-meter-high and 50-meter-wide slope fell off a mountain, causing mud to pour onto surrounding residences and houses.
Following the tragedy, local officials had been looking for the three missing persons. The search at the scene of the landslide was canceled since there were no new reports of missing people.
The landslide happened as the nation’s weather bureau issued a high-alert for landslides and flooding in low-lying areas due to heavy rain, primarily in western Japan.
