In the contest to succeed President Ebrahim Raisi, who passed away in a May helicopter crash, ultraconservative Saeed Jalili and reformist Masoud Pezeshkian will face off in Friday’s runoff election in Iran, according to the interior ministry.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of the Islamic republic and the person with the last say on all affairs of state, cast his ballot as soon as polls opened at 8:00 am (0430 GMT), according to official television.
