PM seeks enhanced trade, business between Bangladesh, Spain

In order to benefit both parties, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina emphasized today the importance of strong trade and commerce between Bangladesh and Spain.

“We want to enhance business between Bangladesh and Spain,” she said as Spanish Ambassador here Gabriel Maria Sistiaga Ochoa de Chinchetru called on her at her official residence Ganabhaban.

Following the meeting, reporters were informed by Md. Nayeemul Islam Khan, the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary.

Khan claims that the prime minister urged the Spanish envoy to take steps to increase Spain’s investment in Bangladesh.

She mentioned that her administration is creating over 100 special economic zones in Bangladesh in this regard.

“Spanish investors can also make investment there as we want to see more investments from Spain,” she added.

The prime minister also asked for Bangladesh’s assistance during the post-LDC graduation phase.

The PM’s press secretary also informed the meeting that talks to establish a partnership agreement between the two nations would begin in September. Spain is home to 60 000 people at the moment. Additionally, the prime minister urged Spain to hire more Bangladeshis, particularly in the IT industry.

The Spanish ambassador said currently his country only imports RMG from Bangladesh while there is a Spanish investment in Bangladesh’s cement sector.

He also highly appreciated Bangladesh’s budget for this fiscal, saying the government has given importance on education and social safety net.

“This is very much important for us. Your increased interest and allocation in social safety net matched our country as well,” he added.

Through the ambassador, the prime minister received an invitation to visit Spain from her Spanish counterpart, which she also thanked.

Present were PM’s Principal Secretary Md. Tofazzel Hossain Miah and Ambassador-at-large Mohammad Ziauddin.
