According to the government, the monsoon is predicted to arrive in Nepal on June 13 and stay until July 1. However, the government has issued a warning that up to 1.8 million people may be impacted by rain-related occurrences during this time.
In order to prepare for the impending monsoon season, the Home Ministry presented the National Risk Minimization and Preparedness Programme 2024 on Monday.
According to official estimates, the Himalayan nation’s monsoon rains would cause landslides and floods that might affect up to 1.8 million people from 412,000 households.
Around 83,000 families will be displaced as a result of the natural disaster this year, and 18,000 of those families will require direct relief supplies, according to Dijan Bhattarai, Spokesperson at the National Disaster Risk Minimization and Management Authority.
The ministry has decided to mobilise 31,000 security personnel, including more than 10,000 Army personnel, to fight the upcoming disaster.
In order to carry out rescue and relief operations, the Nepal Army would maintain helicopters on standby in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Itahari, Bharatpur, and Surkhet.
There were 679 disaster-related occurrences nationwide last year that claimed the lives of 63 persons. Thirty persons were missing and at least 69 people were injured in instances related to natural disasters. People in areas vulnerable to disasters have been urged by the authorities to stay vigilant.
