In one of the bloodiest shipwrecks in European history, a migrant trawler carrying hundreds of people sank off the coast of Greece, and nine alleged smugglers are on trial there starting on Tuesday.
Among the charges against the nine Egyptian guys is negligent homicide. Their defense team claims they are being used as scapegoats to cover up the Greek coastguard’s inability to launch a rescue effort.
