Today, Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun stated that as the leather industry is one of the most export-oriented in the nation, the government is working tirelessly for its total development.
“Short and long term actions have been identified for the development of the leather industry. Short term actions have been fixed for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha and long term actions have been identified for the overall development of the industry. All kinds of support will be provided for the implementation of the actions,” he said.
According to a press release issued here, Humayun made these remarks while chairing the seventh meeting of the “Task Force on Recommendation for Development of Leather Industry and Formulation of Action Plan” at the city’s Industries Ministry.
Senior Secretary of the Industries Ministry Zakia Sultana, State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu, and Prime Minister Salman F. Rahman’s advisor on private industry and investment were present.
Humayun claims that steps are also being taken to ensure that leather sellers or wholesalers do not face financial hardships and may get loans on advantageous terms.
“We need to increase the preservation facilities in the leather industry so that leather does not spoil,” he added.
The minister said animal skins are sent to various religious institutions including orphanages during the Eid-ul-Adha.
“It involves our religious feelings. Training can be arranged for the concerned in proper skinning, preservation and ensuring a quality environment,” he added.
Like in prior meetings, decisions were made to determine the price of the animal skins used as sacrifices, schedule TVC shows or advertisements about the proper removal of skins, and build temporary storage facilities in strategic locations to ensure that skins are preserved with adequate salt.
Moreover, steps have been made to prevent the smuggling of animal sacrifice skins, extortion of any kind, disturbance or unrest in the operations associated with the transportation and collection of skins, and the spread of false information in the media, particularly social media.
