Age restriction for public service: 12 bailed in a mischief case

Twelve persons who were detained in a vandalism and arson case for fighting with police were given bail today by a Dhaka court, despite their demand that the age restriction for entering government job be raised to 35.

Mamun Rashid, Rasel, Humayun Kabir, Al-Amin, Sheikh Farid, Azam Mohammad, Saddam Hussain, Abdul Hakim, Rima Akhtar, Sharmin Akhtar Brishti, and Manik Das are the individuals that were successful in obtaining bail.

The Investigating Officer (IO) for the case asked to have them detained in custody until the trial’s conclusion as they appeared in court this morning. In the meantime, the defendants’ attorneys pleaded for the approval of their bail.

After hearing both the parties, Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Mahbub Ahmed granted their bail on 2000 taka bond each.

According to the case, the defendants held a procession and meeting with various banners and festoons at TSC intersection of the Dhaka University on Saturday on May 11.

At one stage of the procession, they stopped the traffic by sitting on the road at Shahbagh intersection, a very important intersection of the city.

The police asked them to clear the road since it was severely impeding the circulation of hospital visitors, university students, and regular citizens.

After being interrupted, they got into a confrontation with the police officers and duty traffic sergeants.

They attempted to set cars on fire and vandalized automobiles during the altercation.

Sub-Inspector SM Alice Mahmood filed a case with Shahbagh Thana accusing 400 and 500 unidentified individuals of trespassing, vandalizing vehicles, threatening to commit suicide, hindering government activity, and illegally gathering on public property.
