Padma Bank MD resigns, new faces at four banks

Following his resignation, Tarek Reaz Khan, the managing director of the Padma Bank, has agreed to become the new MD of the NRB Bank, which was founded by non-resident Bangladeshis.

He will join the NRB Bank subject to central bank approval. The boards of both banks have already decided that the crisis-hit Padma Bank and EXIM Bank will merge. The Bangladesh Bank has also appointed auditors to conduct an audit of both banks.

Following the resignation of its MD, Mamoon Mahmood Shah, in February, the NRB Bank has been managed by acting MDs.

“I have resigned from the Padma Bank due to the impending merger,” Tarek Reaz Khan said to Prothom Alo. I’m currently looking into joining a different bank.

According to sources at the central bank, a new MD joined Meghna Bank while the Bangladesh Bank is working on appointing MDs at Premier Bank, NCC Bank, and BASIC Bank.

In addition, Md. Habibur Rahman, the MD of Standard Bank, has not yet started working after being placed on leave.

The MD of Standard Bank, which was converted from a conventional bank to a Sharia-based bank on February 1, 2021, began working there on that date. However, on February 29, just before his term was set to expire, he was placed on leave for three months due to a disagreement with a powerful board director.

As soon as the Bangladesh Bank was made aware of the situation, the central bank spoke with the bank and began an investigation.

On the MD’s return, a decision has not yet been made.

Kazi Ahsan Khalil, who was previously the deputy MD of NRB Bank, has joined as the MD of Meghna Bank. Anisur Rahman has been reappointed as the MD of BASIC Bank for another year.

An anonymous Bangladesh Bank official told the media that if the inspection finds the MD not guilty, he will have to join office and a decision will be reached soon. The official added that there is currently no opportunity to fire MDs like before.

The decision has been made by Premier Bank to name Mohammad Abu Jafar as the next MD.

Prior to joining the Premier Bank, Abu Jafar worked at the Dhaka Bank. The MD of NCC Bank will be M Shamshul Arefin, the decision has been made.

These appointments are all awaiting central bank approval.
