US seismologists said that despite a powerful 6.5-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Papua New Guinea early on Monday, there was no risk of a tsunami.
The US Geological Survey said that the epicenter of the earthquake, which struck at 06:56 local time (2056 GMT), was approximately 110 kilometers (68 miles) southeast of Kimbe on the island of New Britain and 64 kilometers deep.
“No tsunami threat” was stated in a statement by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. No early reports of damage were received locally.
Last month, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that left an estimated 1,000 homes demolished and at least five people dead shook the area.
