President Nikos Christodoulides declared that Cyprus will no longer provide asylum to anyone arriving from Syria, despite the fact that a significant number of Syrians are still fleeing to the island nation.
“On account of the latest mass arrival of Syrian political asylum seekers by sea, processing of applications from persons of Syrian origin has been suspended,” Christodoulides said in a post on social media platform X.
The duration of the suspension was not specified by him.
According to the Cypriot administration, the EU’s continuous efforts to reclassify some parts of the war-torn nation as safe zones in order to facilitate repatriations are also a contributing factor in the suspension.
As long as fresh arrangements are not arranged, Syrian refugees will have to stay in the overcrowded reception centers, DPA reported on Sunday, citing government sources.
