On Monday, two Russian missiles were shot down over the capital by Ukrainian air defense systems, injuring ten persons, including an adolescent girl, and causing metal debris to fall to the ground.
Authorities in the eastern district of Kharkiv also declared that a 65-year-old man had perished in his home’s courtyard as a result of Russian shelling.
The attack, the third aircraft bombing of the city in as many days, left one structure ripped apart, and AFP correspondents in Kyiv witnessed emergency personnel in helmets removing concrete and bent metal.
Following deadly Ukrainian bombardments on Russian border regions, Moscow has increased its aircraft attacks on Kyiv, focusing on vital infrastructure.
AFP reporters heard several explosions and air raid sirens in Kyiv almost simultaneously at around 10:30 am (0830 GMT) as officials urged residents to take shelter.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack showed again that Ukraine needed better air defence systems from its allies.
“It means safety for our cities and saved human lives. All of us in the world who respect and protect life need to stop this terror,” he wrote on social media.
Ten persons were reported injured by emergency personnel. Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, stated that two pregnant ladies experienced severe stress reactions and that the teenager was one of the hospitalized individuals.
Oksana, a native of Kiev, heard the air raid sirens and then a bomb while she was at work.
“Before I could do anything, the first explosion hit,” she stated to AFP. “There was a cloud of dust, smashed cars, windows, everything.”
Sergiy Popko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, claimed that two ballistic missiles fired by Russia had been launched from the Crimean peninsula, which it had annexed.
