Leo Varadkar to step down as Irish prime minister

Ireland’s prime minister, Leo Varadkar, declared on Wednesday that he would be resigning as soon as a replacement was selected.

Varadkar will also quitting his position as leader of the Fine Gael party immediately.

Following a struggle for party leadership, a new prime minister will be appointed.

Announcing his resignation, Varadkar stated that his motives were “both personal and political.”

“I am pleased that we have transformed the nation into a fairer and more contemporary society,” the Taoiseach declared in his resignation speech delivered in Dublin.

In 2017, Varadkar was appointed Taoiseach for the first time, a position he held until 2020. When the 45-year-old took office, he was the youngest leader in the nation. He came back for his second term as taoiseach in December 2022.

After taking over as the head of the Republic of Ireland’s government, Varadkar achieved numerous firsts. He was the nation’s first multiracial prime minister, having been born to an Indian father and an Irish mother.
