According to worldwide media estimates, the disaster took over 5,000 lives as hospital morgues in the nation of North Africa were overcrowded with patients being searched for thousands more. At least six Bangladeshi expats were killed and a number of others are still missing.
“According to the latest information we received, six Bangladeshi expatriates living in Derna town were killed” in the cyclonic storm followed by dam collapses,” foreign ministry’s spokesperson Seheli Sabrin told newsmen this evening.
She also said that after Mediterranean storm Daniel, which made landfall in eastern Libya on Sunday, numerous other Bangladeshis were likely missing.
Four of the six dead, according to the spokesman, have been discovered thus far. They have been named as Shaheen and Sujan from Rajbari, as well as Mamun and Shihab from Narayanganj.
According to her, the Bangladeshi community, local and international organizations involved in the rescue effort, as well as the Bangladeshi embassy in Libya, are all in constant touch with the concerned Libyan authorities in an effort to learn more about the missing people.
The embassy was also keeping an eye on how the Bangladeshi community in the affected areas was faring.

The eastern Libyan towns of Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Derna, Sahat, Al-Mari, and Jabel Al-Akhdar were severely impacted by the Daniel.
In the meantime, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued an order to send supplies to eastern Libyans who have been severely impacted by Cyclone Daniel and flooding.
The foreign ministry said a C-130 aircraft carrying relief materials, including medicines and dry food, for the flood-affected people of Libya is expected to be transported from Dhaka as soon as possible.
Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen has expressed condolence and sympathy to Libyan government following the deadly storm.
