The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock issued a press release on Thursday, stating that a 65-day fishing ban will be enforced in the Bay of Bengal from May 20 to July 23.
The ministry’s Public Relations Officer Md Iftekhar Hossain said that this is a regular initiative to ensure optimal fish breeding conditions, as reported by UNB.
During this time, all saltwater fish will be forbidden from being caught. According to the announcement, all commercial trawlers have been ordered to follow the moratorium.
The fishing moratorium is supposed to help the marine ecosystem as well as the livelihoods of millions of fishermen. According to the ministry, the prohibition will enhance fish production by 10% while also creating job chances for fishermen.
The fishing prohibition comes as a low pressure system develops over the Bay of Bengal, which might grow into a cyclone and bring heavy rains and severe winds to Bangladesh and India’s coasts.
The authorities have warned fishermen to remain vigilant and refrain from entering into the sea until further notice.
