The mother of one of his children and an advocacy group requested the court to defend the rights of the impacted families. If the 41-year-old, identified as Jonathan M., disregards the judgment, he faces a €10,000 penalty.
A Dutch court ruled on Friday that a man who fathered over 550 children can no longer give sperm.
An advocacy group and a mother who had a kid with the man’s sperm sought an injunction against him, citing clinical guidelines that state a donor should not father more than 25 children in 12 households in order to avoid incest.
If the individual does not cooperate, the Hague court has threatened him with a €10,000 ($11,000) fine each case.
Due to privacy laws, the 41-year-old Dutch national was identified as Jonathan M. in local media. He is also said to have used additional names.
According to the court, he has supplied his sperm to fertility clinics, sperm banks, and countless couples via internet forums since 2007.
More than a hundred of his children were born at clinics in the Netherlands, while others were born privately.
However, he also donated sperm to a Danish clinic called Cryos, which then sent it to private addresses in various countries, according to the judge.
He was able to get around the rules because there is no central sperm donor registry.
It is also unknown how many children the man fathered outside of the country.
According to his defense attorney, the individual only wanted to assist couples who might otherwise be unable to procreate.
