Pope on the mend as antibiotics target bronchitis

After learning that his bronchitis was reacting well to antibiotic treatment and that he might be released “in the coming days,” doctors advised Pope Francis to prepare for a third day in the hospital on Friday.

Following complaints of breathing issues, the 86-year-old pope was admitted on Wednesday for what the Vatican described as pre-planned tests.

He did, however, seem to rapidly recover, and by Thursday morning, he was feeling well enough to work from his private suite in Rome’s Gemelli hospital and eat, pray, and do other things.

Medical personnel stated in a statement late Thursday that he had “infectious bronchitis, which required the administration of antibiotics.”

According to the report, Francis’ health has “markedly improved” as a result of the therapy, and he could return to the Vatican “in the coming days.”

His statement caused a lot of people to worry.

It was the Argentinean’s second medical stay since 2021; as a young man, he had a portion of one of his lungs removed due to health complications.

Due to the pope’s sickness, it is unclear if he will attend services during the most significant Christian holidays of Holy Week and Easter.

The festivities, which begin this weekend with Palm Sunday, would typically be presided over by Francis, who earlier this month celebrated his tenth anniversary as leader of the Catholic Church.
