In light of rumors that an agreement has been reached on controlling illegal immigration across the long border between the neighbors, US President Joe Biden was scheduled to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday and speak before the Canadian parliament.
The main topics on the agenda were predicted to be trade, Canada’s meager military spending, and a potential international force to help stabilize Haiti.
There were rumors that another contentious issue in the otherwise cordial relationship had been resolved through an agreement to crack down on undocumented migration by asylum seekers transiting through the United States into Canada as Biden took off from Washington late on Thursday.
The Roxham Road crossing point on the border between New York state and Quebec is where Canada will be able to halt illegal immigrants, according to The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.
Similar to how illegal crossings of the US-Mexico border are a source of annoyance in Washington, Canada’s internal politics have been irritated by the flow of migrants there.
According to the reports, Canada has agreed in exchange for a reduction in pressure at the southern US border to accept 15,000 asylum applicants from Latin America through legal channels.
Despite declining to confirm the report, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “We will hear more about it from the president and the prime minister.”
