On Tuesday, the US announced $26 million in fresh humanitarian aid for the Rohingya in Bangladesh and other countries in that part of Asia.
A million people from the predominantly Muslim Rohingya community reside in relief camps in Bangladesh, many of whom escaped a military crackdown that occurred in neighboring Myanmar in 2017. One of the worst humanitarian disasters in history was brought on by the assault.
“This new funding allows our humanitarian partners to continue providing life-saving assistance to affected communities on both sides of the Burma-Bangladesh border,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said, using the old name for Myanmar.
According to him, the additional funds bring the overall amount of US aid given to the Rohingya since August 2017 to $2.1 billion.
Following a reduction in their food rations due to dwindling donations, the UN announced Tuesday that it needs $876 million to satisfy the Rohingya population’s humanitarian needs in Bangladesh.
