According to a global monitoring group for digital rights, Bangladesh is one of the top five nations where internet censorship as “weapons of control” was implemented last year.
According to a report yesterday from the #KeepItOn coalition and digital rights group Access Now, Bangladeshi officials have already shut down the internet six times in 2022. It claimed that the closures were mandated during protest marches by the BNP.
According to the report, authorities shut down the internet at least 187 times in 35 different nations last year, which is the most ever in a single year.
With 84 shutdowns, India is at the top of the list globally, with 49 of them occurring in Indian-administrated Kashmir.
With 22 shutdowns, Ukraine, which Russia invaded last year, is in second position, followed by Iran in third with 18 shutdowns. With 7 shutdowns, Burma holds down the fourth position.
With six shutdowns, Bangladesh is ranked fifth, according to the study.
“These protracted and maliciously targeted attacks on human rights were deployed to wipe out democratic movements, crush people’s power, and provide cover for violence,” said the report titled Weapons of control, shields of impunity: Internet shutdowns in 2022.
According to the report, there were 48 shutdowns in 14 nations, including Bangladesh, at the same time as known violations of human rights.
