On Wednesday, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced her unexpected resignation and called for a leadership election for the Scottish National Party (SNP).
Even though she had previously said she wouldn’t quit, she recently told reporters: “In my head and in my heart I realize the time has finally come.”
The Scottish National Party leader said she knew “in my head and in my heart” this was the right time to step down.
Ms. Sturgeon declared that she would stay in her position until her successor was chosen.
She was the first woman to hold the office of first minister and has held it the longest.
