According to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Tokyo intends to improve relations with its G7 allies and nations in the Global South as part of a strategy of sanctions on Russia and support for Ukraine.
“In order to make sure that the international community cooperates in response to various challenges facing the world, the G7 will unite and strengthen its interaction with the so-called Global South. To that end, we will work together to overcome the energy and food crisis in the global economy. In addition, we will actively promote sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine,” he pointed out in an address to the lower house of parliament.
At the Hiroshima summit, Tokyo aimed to demonstrate its determination to lead international efforts to establish a world free of nuclear weapons, Kishida said in reference to Japan’s G7 leadership.
The G7 summit will be held in the city of Hiroshima in May; Japan is the G7 chair this year.
On August 6, 1945, the US Air Force launched an atomic bomb on the city, and on August 9, 1945, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Having a G7 conference in Hiroshima would send a powerful message to the world, he said, underscoring the need to give up nuclear weapons. Kishida represents a district that contains Hiroshima.
