US to promise Patriot missiles to Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, will visit Washington on Wednesday to meet with Joe Biden and speak to the US Congress.

He will be traveling for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 on this trip. Late on Tuesday, the White House officially announced the trip.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated on Tuesday night that Biden is looking forward to the trip and that his speech to Congress would show “the strong, bipartisan support for Ukraine.”

According to a US official, Biden and Zelenskyy first broached the subject of a trip to Washington during their phone discussion on December 11; three days later, a formal invitation arrived. On Friday, Zelenskyy accepted the invitation, and on Sunday, the trip was officially confirmed.

When she visited Zelenskyy earlier this year in Kyiv, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged legislators to be there for the session on Wednesday night. She said of Ukrainians, “They are fighting for democracy for all of us.
