Following optimistic exit poll results for his competitor, former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said it was too early to draw any conclusions about the results of Tuesday’s election.
The right-wing Likud party and its partners may be on pace to gain a majority in the 120-seat parliament, according to projections from three Israeli networks, but with such narrow margins, things might change as the votes are tabulated.
If the early predictions come true, that would mark the end of the eight-party coalition’s brief time in power after ousting Netanyahu the previous year before dissolving.
Amid uncertainty, Lapid, a centrist, told his supporters at a rally in Tel Aviv early on Wednesday that such predictions were premature.
“Nothing is decided,” he said. “We will wait patiently… for the final results.”
