Following her victory in the internal leadership election of the governing Conservative party, Liz Truss was named the next prime minister of the United Kingdom on Monday.
After a summer-long internal campaign prompted by Boris Johnson’s resignation in July, the foreign secretary defeated her competitor, former finance minister Rishi Sunak, by 81,326 votes to 60,399 votes.
Liz Truss was named the new leader of the British Conservative Party on Monday. She will take over for Prime Minister Boris Johnson and deal with the country’s worst economic crisis in decades.
After a grueling summer-long election, decided by just over 170,000 Conservative members, a tiny fraction of the electorate in Britain, the foreign secretary easily defeated her opponent, former finance minister Rishi Sunak, by a margin of approximately 57 to 43 percent.
Truss gave a brief victory speech at the announcement in a conference center in the heart of London, calling it a “honor” to be chosen after “one of the longest job interviews in history.”
