Russia closes airspace to flights from Bulgaria, Poland, Czech Republic & UK

Russia said Saturday it was closing its airspace to flights from Bulgaria, Poland and the Czech Republic in response to punishment over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Air carriers of these states and/or registered in them are subject to restrictions on flights to destinations on the territory of the Russian Federation, including transit flights through the airspace of the Russian Federation,” the federal air transport agency Rosaviation said.

The measure will take effect on Saturday at 3 p.m. local time.

Russia’s state civil aviation regulator announced on Friday that British airlines are no longer permitted to land at its airports or fly through its airspace.

The decision comes after London put an embargo on Russian flag carrier Aeroflot flights in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“The use of Russian airspace by aircraft owned, leased, or operated by an organization affiliated to or registered in the United Kingdom has been restricted,” the Rosaviatsia aviation regulator said in a statement.
