Pope warns of ‘increasingly alarming scenarios’ in Ukraine

In response to worries of a Russian invasion, Pope Francis stated on Wednesday that “increasingly worrisome scenarios” were emerging in Ukraine, threatening “all peace.”

“Despite these past weeks’ diplomatic efforts, new dangerous situations are arising,” the pontiff stated at the conclusion of his weekly public audience.
“I implore all parties involved to refrain from any action that could exacerbate the population’s suffering,” he stated.

Next Wednesday, which is Ash Wednesday in the Christian calendar and the start of Lent, will be a “day of fasting and prayer for peace,” according to Francis.

“So that the reign of peace can preserve the world against the madness of war,” he said.

In Ukraine, the Pope has previously called for peace.

However, his most recent remarks are his most forceful yet, coming only two days after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered “peacekeepers” to enter two separatist Ukrainian areas that Moscow now recognizes as autonomous.

The move has fueled fears that Russia may invade other sections of Ukraine.
