Extreme deterioration of law and order in Peru, a state of emergency has been declared
Peru’s law and order situation has drastically deteriorated. To deal with the crisis, the government has proclaimed a state of emergency.
Thousands of police and army soldiers were deployed by the government in the cities of Lima and Calao on Friday (January 4th). For the next month and a half, the state of emergency will be in effect. Individual freedom and movement of persons will be restricted during this time. At the same time, the administration has made it illegal to hold gatherings or rallies.
Security forces will patrol the city 24 hours a day throughout this time. The general public, as well as vehicles, will be searched. The decision comes as crime began to grow at an alarming rate late last year, according to authorities. According to statistics, 60,000 assault cases were reported in Lima alone in 2021.
