Selena Gomez, a music sensation, actor, and producer, believes that talking about mental health is beneficial, and she is committed to be a catalyst for positive change.
The “Ice Cream” singer has launched Wondermind, a mental health platform aimed at connecting individuals with educational tools and eradicating the stigma associated with mental diseases.
She founded the media company alongside her mother, Mandy Teefey, and The Newsette founder and CEO Daniella Pierson, and it will launch in February 2022.
Gomez hasn’t been bashful about talking about her mental health in public. She previously stated that she is a “strong advocate for social media detoxes” and counseling in a CNN article.
In April, she revealed that she suffers from bipolar disorder on Miley Cyrus’ Instagram show “Bright Minded.”
“I went to one of the best mental hospitals in America, McLean Hospital, and I discussed that after years of going through a lot of different things, I realized that I was bipolar,” Gomez said. “And so when I got to know more information, it actually helps me. It doesn’t scare me once I know it.”
According to the Wondermind website’s welcome video, her mother was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder for over 20 years, which eventually turned out to be attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, with trauma.
Pierson also shared her story in the video, revealing that she has had the obsessive-compulsive disorder since she was a child.
The three said they struggled to find a safe space online where they could regularly engage with positive mental health content. This is where Wondermind comes in.
