According to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the long-rumoured sixth instalment in the Die Hard franchise, dubbed McClane, is definitely dead. Despite Bruce Willis earlier indicating that he planned to retire from the role of John McClane, which he has portrayed since 1988, speculation of a sixth film has been swirling since the fifth picture, A Good Day to Die Hard, was released in 2013.
McClane, the upcoming Die Hard prequel, is dead… hard. Following the box office failure of A Good Day To Die Hard in 2013, the producers announced a prequel/reboot of the franchise. According to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the narrative of how Gennero wound up in Los Angeles will remain untold.
“No, it’s not going to happen,” di Bonaventura stated. “However, what was most intriguing was that we really came up with a plan to achieve it. It was a project that wasn’t Die Hard at the time but morphed into Die Hard later.”
It’s a long-running custom in the series to rewrite a script to fit the Die Hard mold. Die Hard 2, for example, was based on the novel 58 Minutes, which had no connection to McClane. Before screenwriters inserted Bruce Willis’ character, Die Hard With A Vengeance was almost a Lethal Weapon sequel.
