Tunisian police attacked Al Jazeera’s Tunis bureau, expelling all workers after President Kais Saied dissolved the cabinet late Sunday in a move that critics labelled a coup.
According to Al Jazeera correspondents in Tunis, at least 20 heavily armed plainclothes police officers raided the office on Monday, claiming that the officers did not have warrants for the raid.
“We received no prior notification of the security forces’ expulsion of our office,” claimed Lotfi Hajji, Al Jazeera’s bureau chief in Tunisia.
All journalists were asked to leave by the security personnel who said they were following orders from the country’s judiciary.
Security agents told reporters to turn off their phones and that they were not permitted back into the facility to retrieve their belongings.
Other items were seized by the officers.
