Ebrahim Raisi became Iran’s new president

Widely discussed Ibrahim Raisi had won Iran’s presidential election. The country’s state media reported his victory on Saturday morning. The defeated candidates congratulated him.

About 90 percent of the people voted in Iran’s presidential election. Raisi was elected president with just over 16 million votes.

Raisi, 70, is currently one of the most influential figures in the country’s ruling government. He lost the last election to Hassan Rouhani. Khamenei and Raisi, Iran’s supreme spiritual leader, were born in the same place, in the northeastern city of Mashhad. Unlike Khamenei, however, his popularity and acceptance are widespread among the country’s hardline Shia majority.

Raisi, who has declared himself a staunch opponent of corruption, incompetence and the elite, is a political supporter of Shia Islamic extremism. In addition to the country’s democrats, he is also a fierce critic of the United States and Western countries. But he has softened his tone on the United States and the West, as recent sanctions have crippled Iran’s economy.
