Fighters from the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas have launched an unprecedented rocket attack on the country’s capital, Tel Aviv, in response to Israeli airstrikes in the besieged Gaza Strip. They fired at least 130 rockets at Tel Aviv on Tuesday (May 11th) night.
The distance from Gaza to Tel Aviv is about 93 kilometers and this is the first time that such a large number of rockets have been fired at a target so far inside Israel.
Rocket attacks by Hamas fighters in Tel Aviv on Tuesday night sent shockwaves through the city and surrounding areas. Hearing the loud sound of sirens, people rushed to the underground shelters.
The Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing, said in a statement: “We have kept our word, In response to enemy attacks in residential areas of Gaza, we have launched the largest ever attack with 130 rockets in and around Tel Aviv.”
Hamas says it fired 137 rockets at the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon and the port city of Ashdod in just five minutes. The group warned that further surprises awaited the country if Israel did not stop its aggression.
