The European Union (EU) is preparing to open its borders to 15 countries outside Europe. The border may be reopened on Wednesday. However, two EU diplomats said the United States was not on the list.
Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, all countries have tightened their borders. The EU does the same as an alliance. The EU closed its borders last March when the rate of COVID-19 infection began to rise at a geometric rate. But now that the situation in the region is relatively under control, the alliance is deciding to gradually open the border.
Citing two EU diplomats who were aware of the incident, US media quoted CNN as saying that so far a preliminary decision has been made to open the borders to 15 countries outside Europe. However, no final decision has been taken yet. Such a decision will be taken only if the 28 countries of the alliance agree on this issue.
China is one of the 15 countries the EU is initially considering opening its borders to. The list also includes Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay. The EU did not include the United States in the initial list, despite plans to open the border to China, the origin of the coronavirus. However, the EU will only agree to open its doors to China if China similarly opens its doors to EU countries.
