Researchers in Hong Kong have developed bionic eyes that have more vision than the human eye. This electrochemical device will restore sight in the eyes of blind people. This eye will be ready to use in the next 5 years.
Researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology say it can be used by anyone with partial or complete blindness.
According to a report in The Sun, the device is designed to look like a human eye. For this, the researchers have added the perfect structural design required. The device is capable of surpassing all the functions of the human eye. It is called the world’s first 3D artificial eyeball.
An article on the study was published in the journal Nature. The article states that the device, which is as functional as the human eye, can hold high resolution. The tiny sensors in it can convert images, which are similar to the photosensitive cells in the human eye. These sensors are housed in a membrane made of aluminum and tungsten, in the shape of a semicircle intended to copy the human retina design.
The bionic eye, is basically a visual prosthesis, designed to be used as an experimental device for the blind. Creating such devices was very challenging. But Xiang Fan, a professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, said the current research would lead to the creation of a full-fledged bionic eye. In the next 5 years, this technology will take practical form and will be usable. Researchers are planning clinical trials in animals and humans.
