Germany and Estonia presented a resolution to the UN Security Council (UNSC) on a ceasefire in several conflicts around the world through the coronavirus pandemic time, to replace the one that was drafted by France and Tunisia that the US has blocked.
This move is intended to support some 20 nations in crisis or at war battle the coronavirus, but it is unclear if strong steps on the ground have been taking.
The resolution adopts from the French-Tunisian proposal, applying language allowed upon by the 15 Council members during discussions that have been ongoing since last March or that had been used in previous resolutions, such as making ceasefire exceptions to fight jihadist groups.
As in the French-Tunisian resolution, the latest plan calls for a “humanitarian suspension for at least 90 following days” in order to provide for the delivery of assistant to the hardest-hit communities.
No date has been set yet for voting, but it could occur promptly if none of the five permanent Security Council members approaches to use its veto against it. In the last resolution by French-Tunisian was got veto by the USA.
The new resolution was introduced on Tuesday during a teleconference held behind closed doors and organized by Estonia, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council. The resolution was submitted in the afternoon.
