Virgin Atlantic has declared to lay off around 3,000 jobs within the UK and end its operation at Gatwick airport.
The shock declaration comes after Virgin Atlantic’s competitor British Airways said it couldn’t rule out seizing its Gatwick operation. Pilots’ union Balpa described it as “devastating”.
Many airlines are struggling because the coronavirus pandemic has brought global visit a virtual halt.
The airline currently has around 10,000 employees.
Virgin Atlantic is currently within the process of applying for emergency loans from the govt, said that jobs are going to be lost across the board.
“We have weathered many storms since our first flight 36 years ago but none has been as devastating as Covid-19 and the associated loss of life and livelihood for so many,” said Virgin Atlantic chief executive Shai Weiss.
