UNESCO has certified Bangladeshi Dance Artist and Director Ms Pooja Sengupta and Turongomi School of Dance as registered member and organization of their International Dance Council (CID). On January 31, 2014, Pooja Sengupta founded Turongomi Repertory Dance Theatre to promote professionalism in dance practice in Bangladesh and to establish Bangladesh’s signature dancing genre, inspired by Bengali literature. It is the first dance theatre and dance-based repertory in Bangladesh.
In 2018, on the occasion of Turongomi Repertory’s four years anniversary celebration, Turongomi School of Dance was inaugurated. Apart from traditional dance lessons, Turongomi School of Dance emphasizes on research on dance education and creation of new movements. Turongomi strongly believes that UNESCO’s recognition will inspire the team and amplify the aftermath of their efforts to establish Bangladesh’s signature dancing style and to promote Bangladeshi dance on international platforms.
