IOM Egypt has helped the Syria Al Ghad community-based foundation to renovate and expand a medical center which provides free and low-cost medical services for Syrian refugees and host communities. The center has been fully operational for a few weeks.
The center, in Cairo, is expected to provide health assistance this year to around 5,000 refugee and host community families in Al Obour City and in surrounding neighborhoods. It particularly focuses on women’s health and offers specialized services such as ophthalmology and dermatology. It also has a medical laboratory and a pharmacy that provides prescription medications generally free of charge.
“IOM’s support came in the form of medications and clinical supplies. In addition, ultrasound and other specialized medical equipment were provided to the gynecology clinic in order to rehabilitate and upgrade their medical facilities,” said Teuta Grazhdani, IOM Egypt’s Head of Labour Mobility and Human Development.
“We hope to see more such initiatives in the future whereby the needs of women and men are addressed in a way that empowers migrant and host communities,” said Heba Abdellatif, IOM Egypt’s Gender Focal Point.
This renovation was made possible with funding from the US State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), as part of the 3RP Regional Refugee and Resilience Plan 2016.
