DHAKA – As the month of Chaitra draws to a close, the capital is set to immerse itself in the vibrant traditions of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). The second edition of the “Biju, Boisu, Sangrai, Changkran, Bishu” fair will commence on Wednesday, April 9, bringing the festive spirit of the hill communities to the heart of the city.
The three-day event will be held at the Shakyamuni Buddhist Vihar in Mirpur-13. Organized by the Dhaka-based Hill Entrepreneurs Small Business Cooperative Society Limited, the fair aims to celebrate the traditional year-end and New Year festivities of the indigenous mountain ethnic groups.
According to Subimal Chakma, Member Secretary of the organizing committee, the fair will run daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM through Friday, April 11.
The festival is supported by the indigenous blood donors’ organization “Zubda” and the CHT Welfare Society. Visitors can expect a diverse showcase of the highlands, including:
While the main celebrations in the Chittagong Hill Tracts are scheduled for April 12–14, this Dhaka-based fair serves as a cultural bridge for city dwellers. Each ethnic community refers to the festival by a different name—such as Biju for Chakmas, Boisu for Tripuras, and Sangrai for Marmas—yet the spirit of welcoming the New Year remains universal.
“There is immense interest in the lifestyle and culture of the hill people,” said Subimal Chakma. “This fair offers city residents, both Pahari and Bengali, a chance to experience our diverse cultural heritage, attire, and food right here in the capital.”
The organizers invite people from all walks of life to participate in this festive gathering, which promises to be a colorful prelude to the traditional New Year celebrations.
