The nation will observe Genocide Day tomorrow

In remembrance of the violent crackdown on unarmed Bengalis by Pakistani colonial troops on the terrible night of March 25, 1971, known as “Operation Searchlight,” the country will commemorate Genocide Day.

On the eve of the event, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and President Mohammed Shahabuddin released special greetings.

To honor the day, the government has organized a number of state-level events.

According to a PID handout released today, a one-minute symbolic “blackout” will be conducted countrywide tomorrow from 10:30 to 10:31 p.m.

Key installations (KPIs) and emergency establishments will be exempt from the programme.
Discussion and memorial programmes will be held at educational institutions — including schools, colleges, madrasahs, and technical institutes — with participation from eminent personalities and valiant freedom fighters, highlighting the genocide and the Great Liberation War.

Documentary screenings and rare photographic exhibitions on the genocide will be arranged at selected locations in all city corporation areas, including Dhaka, starting from 12:00 noon.
In remembrance of the victims of the tragedy, special prayers will be conducted at mosques following Zuhr prayers or at other opportune times. Prayers will also be performed at various houses of worship around the nation. At night, illumination will be avoided.

Additionally, a symposium organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Liberation War Museum will take place at 10:00 am.

The handout also stated that the information was revealed during an interministerial conference on the execution of national programs commemorating Independence and National Day 2026 and Genocide Day 2026.
