Illegal stores, extensions, and business setups that are occupying pavements and roadways throughout the capital have been ordered to be removed immediately by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The DMP noted in a notification today that numerous eateries, workshops, and retail stores had extended their operations outside of their buildings, blocking roads and walkways.
The notification claims that although motor workshops use pavements for tire storage and auto repairs, food companies have been erecting cooking equipment such burners, pots, grills, and kebab stations on sidewalks.
Welding shops, furniture and clothing stores have also been displaying goods and materials on public walkways.
The DMP said such encroachments are seriously disrupting pedestrian movement, forcing people onto roads and increasing the risk of accidents and traffic congestion.
The police authority has urged all business owners to remove encroachments and materials from sidewalks and road spaces without delay.
It warned that from April 1, mobile courts led by metropolitan magistrates and executive magistrates will conduct drives across the city. Violators may face imprisonment, fines, and confiscation of goods under relevant laws.
The notice also called for public cooperation in restoring free and safe pedestrian access throughout the city of Dhaka.
