The death of journalist Saleem Samad

While receiving treatment at Bangladesh Medical College Hospital in the capital city of Dhanmondi, senior journalist Saleem Samad passed away on Sunday morning (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un). He was seventy-four.

Prothom Alo was informed about Saleem Samad’s passing by his close friend, well-known writer and columnist Mohiuddin Ahmad.

“Saleem Samad was admitted to the hospital in a very critical condition,” Mohiuddin Ahmad told Prothom Alo. Last Friday, I visited him. He died this morning.

At 2:30 PM today, Saleem Samad’s janaza, or funeral prayers, will take place on the grounds of the National Press Club.

Salim Samad had a cancer diagnosis, according to his relatives. Today, he will be laid to rest at the family cemetery in Mirpur-11.

Saleem Samad’s investigative reporting was well known. For his brave journalism, he was chosen as an Ashoka Fellow in 1990. He has contributed to India’s Outlook and India Today magazines in addition to the renowned Time magazine.

Saleem Samad focused on environmental and development research and investigative reporting. He was connected to numerous domestic and foreign media outlets, academic institutions, and human rights organizations.

Saleem Samad was born on November 13, 1952, according to information on his Facebook page.

Saleem Samad was charged with sedition by the then-government in 2002. He spent a considerable amount of time behind bars after being arrested.

Saleem Samad recently contributed pieces to a number of magazines, such as International Affairs Review, Shuddhashar, and the Dhaka Tribune.

“It never feels good to hear or convey news of someone’s death,” remarked writer Mohiuddin Ahmad, a friend of his, in a Facebook post. However, the sole reality of life is death.

“I went to see him on Friday morning. It seemed like he was passing his final moments. Just five minutes ago, I got the news that he is no more.

“Our dear friend Saleem Samad has left us. I have not seen a journalist as brave as him. May his soul rest in peace.”
