Bangladesh has been chosen to serve as the UN Peacebuilding Commission’s (PBC) 2026 Vice-Chair.According to a communication received here this morning, the PBC’s five-member bureau was elected on Thursday at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Following a brief ceremony, Bangladesh took over as Vice-Chair at the first PBC meeting of its 20th session.
In a statement, the Bangladesh delegation reaffirmed its commitment to the UN’s peacebuilding initiatives and operations, as well as its future plans of action, and thanked the Commission members for restoring their faith and confidence in Bangladesh for this significant responsibility. The members of the Commission during its first meeting of the 20th session elected Morocco as Chair while Germany, Brazil, Croatia and Bangladesh were elected as Vice-Chairs. On this occasion, the President of the UN General Assembly and Chef de Cabinet, on behalf of the Secretary-General were present and delivered statements emphasizing the role of the PBC. The Peacebuilding Commission is an intergovernmental advisory body that supports peace efforts in conflict-affected countries. The General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and the top nations that provide troops and money to the UN system elect the 31 member states that make up the Commission.Bangladesh has been a member of the Commission since its founding in 2005 and has previously held the positions of vice-chair in 2013 and 2023 and chair in 2012 and 2022.
