Begum Khaleda Zia remembered with deep respect at Chief Justice’s reception

BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was remembered with deep respect at a reception accorded to Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury at the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today. 
 
The reception was organized by the Attorney General’s Office and the Supreme Court Bar Association at Courtroom No. 1 of the Appellate Division at 10:30am.

Begum Khaleda Zia passed away on December 30, 2025, at 6:00 am while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was buried the next day with full state honors beside her husband, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.

Speaking at the programme, Additional Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf, currently discharging the duties of the Attorney General, paid tribute to Begum Khaleda Zia, saying, “I express my deepest respect to the late Begum Khaleda Zia, the three-time former Prime Minister and national leader, who recently passed away. She dedicated her life to the nation and to democracy. I pray to Almighty Allah to grant this great woman Jannatul Ferdous.”
 
From the Supreme Court Bar Association, its President Barrister A M Mahbubuddin Khokon, in his speech at the reception, recalled Begum Khaleda Zia’s role, saying she had carried out a long struggle for the independence of the judiciary and the establishment of democracy in the country. “We remember her with profound respect,” he said. 
 
Judges of both divisions of the Supreme Court, senior lawyers, journalists and officials of the Supreme Court were present at the reception.

Earlier, Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury took the oath as the 26th Chief Justice of the country on December 28.
