German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Rüdiger Lotz has visited the Sundarbans, highlighting Germany’s commitment to protecting the world’s largest mangrove forest and supporting Bangladesh’s long-term biodiversity conservation efforts.
Ambassador Lotz, accompanied by the Embassy’s biodiversity team, toured key areas of the Sundarbans, home to the iconic Royal Bengal Tiger, endangered river dolphins and over 300 bird species, said a statement of the German embassy here today.
The Embassy noted that the mangrove ecosystem not only sustains extraordinary wildlife but also supports millions of people living in adjacent coastal regions.
According to the Embassy, Germany has provided more than 19 million euros since 2015 to assist Bangladesh in conserving the Sundarbans.
This support focuses on strengthening forest surveillance, safeguarding ecologically sensitive zones, and engaging communities in sustainable livelihood activities to reduce pressure on forest resources.
