Airbus-led group to pay Norway $351 mn over cancelled helicopters

The Norwegian government announced Monday that NHIndustries (NHI), a defense company led by Airbus, has agreed to pay Norway 305 million euros ($351 million) to resolve a dispute over a cancelled contract for military helicopters that had been delayed for a long time.

In order to outfit its coast guard and navy frigates by the end of 2008, Norway placed an order for 14 NH90 helicopters in 2001.

However, the program was beset by lengthy delays, and after just eight aircraft were delivered, the Norwegian government terminated the contract in 2022.

Oslo then filed a lawsuit against NHI, a group that included Airbus Helicopters, the Italian defense company Leonardo, and the Dutch company Fokker, for damages and reimbursement of about 2.9 billion euros.

According to a statement from the Norwegian defense ministry, the two parties ultimately came to an agreement that puts an end to all legal processes.

To replace the NH90 aircraft it abandoned, Norway placed an order for six Seahawk helicopters from US manufacturer Sikorsky in 2023.
