Macron heads to Egypt on Monday to back Gaza ceasefire deal

According to the Elysee Palace, French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Egypt on Monday to support the U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement in Gaza and to talk about the next stages of its implementation.

The French government did not specify if Macron will meet with US President Donald Trump, who mediated the agreement between Israel and Hamas and may also visit Egypt.

Macron will travel to Sharm El-Sheikh, a resort town on the Red Sea in Egypt that served as the venue for the oblique negotiations that led to the Gaza agreement.

According to the Elysee, he would have talks “with partners on the next steps of the peace plan’s implementation” there.

It added that Macron’s trip was a continuation of a Franco-Saudi initiative to foster peace and security in the Middle East, based on “the two-state solution” of Israeli and Palestinian states coexisting.

As part of its push toward that objective, France recognized a Palestinian state last month, which angered Israel and drew criticism from the US.

The political instability in France coincides with Macron’s trip.

Sebastien Lecornu, an ally who resigned as prime minister on Monday, was just reappointed by the president and given the responsibility of establishing a cabinet in order to enact an austerity budget that was largely rejected by the French parliament.
