The water level at Dalia point of the Teesta river in Nilphamari district is nearing danger level due to onrush water from upstream region and hilly areas. “Low-lying areas and chars of 15 villages in Purba Chatnai, Pashchim Chatnai, Khoga Khoribari, Goyabari unions under Dimla upazila of the district have been inundated as the Teesta river is overflowing,” Executive Engineer of the Dalia Water Development Board Amitav Chowdhury told BSS. The water level of the Teesta may rise during the next 24 hours meaning the low-lying areas in the district are likely to be flooded, he said.
“We are closely monitoring the rising trend of water level in the river . . . we are taking preventive measures to protect the flood-prone areas of Nilphamari district,” Amitav added. Last month, many different low-lying and char areas of the Nilphamari witnessed flood triggered by overflowing of the Teesta river. According to the Local office of Water Development Board, the Teesta was flowing 18 centimeters above danger level.
